Writing a Term Paper - at a Glance

Okay. So you got the dreaded assignment: a term paper. And you want it to be good, you need it to be good. But just thinking about doing the project makes you kind of queasy. Take a look at this short article and you'll find it's not as daunting as you think.

Think first!
Consider your topic carefully. Jot down any and all ideas, honing in on a subject inside the assignment description until you find a subject that clicks for you, personally. If you're interested in the material, you'll have a much better shot at creativity and excellence.

Information gathering:
The first thing to realize is your opinions are one thing but the facts are another. Back up your opinions with facts. This means hunting down information. Use your textbook, of course, but also use the library and whatever reliable online sources you can find. Read, read and then read some more, making notes in whatever format you can (but not inside the library books).

Make an outline:
This is the part where you make sense out of what you've read. It's helpful to develop a thesis condensing the main point of your paper into one sentence. Put that in the beginning of your paper, then list the information in categories for the body of the paper. At the end, draw your logical conclusion.

The writing:
A really great way to approach any writing is to just let your thoughts flow as fast as you can, following your outline. You're going to have to proof and edit later anyway, and you will find this approach keeps your paper fresh.

Make sure your paper looks good and all your references are noted, with a bibliography.
