MLM - Is it For Me?

MLM is also known as network marketing, it is a form of marketing that involves selling a product or service through a dedicated network of distributors / sales people. MLM is in essence a form of direct sales, which bypasses the need for advertisement.

There are many MLM opportunities around the United States ranging from companies that sell bath soaps, vitamins and beauty solutions to massage chairs and machines. However you need to find an MLM opportunity that you have specific abilities in, preferably something you have worked with before. If you have prior sales experience, then you already have a network of contacts in place. However I have found that if you market the business online you will create success much faster than trying to sell to friends, family and people you meet.

MLM is all about contacts and how you present yourself. After all it is purely sales, that can become a bit of a headache if this is your first time. However a majority of MLM opportunities will also provide you with training, this training will help you convince people and close a sale. On the other had for businesses that don't provide trainings you will need to experiment with some trial and error or seek the help of an associate or your up line. Your up-line will be more than happy to show you the ropes, since he/she will make a commission off your sales as well.

Salespeople looking to join the network may be asked to pay for their initial training as well as marketing materials, or even to buy a significant amount of the product they are about of market. Legit MLM businesses will follow the 70% rule that requires that each participating member sell off at least 70% of the product they purchased before they purchase more, this is vastly to prevent "inventory loading" that qualifies them for bonuses. Many critics and attorneys insist that the 70% of the product that is purchased should be sold to non-participants, however MLM businesses benefit significantly from sales for self consumption.

Many MLM opportunities are legitimate, and people do make a steady income of their sales. However they are not get rich quick schemes, rather it takes months if not years to develop a strong network of sales people, that perform. A strong product doesn't require much effort to sell, but it would be a good idea to try out the product yourself before you recommend it to others. Be sure to first identify the right MLM opportunity before you spend your time and money on something you don't feel strongly about yourself.
