Keywords:
search engines
Word Count: 1151
If you have a business or are
considering starting a business then you have probably considered
building a website to both educate potential prospects as
well as market your product or services. The Internet is
becoming more and more popular every day as more and more
people have access. By having a website your business can
instantly have a full color brochure available to anyone
with Internet access with only a few keystrokes. And the
possibilities do not end there. Not only can you educate
consumers about your product or service, market to them
but you can also sell your products online and maintain
a full-fledged retail operation without having an actual
brick and mortar building.
The importance and opportunities provided
by having a website is probably nothing new to you and you
have probably already researched the options for building
one for your business or potential business. This report
is not about how to build your website but rather how to
get people to visit your site once you have it completed.
Let's face it, you could have an awesome website but if
no one ever sees it then it is not going to do any you any
good in promoting your business or making sales. If you
have done your research you have probably found a host of
companies promising to optimize your website and guarantee
you top placement in the search engines for a hefty fees
The purpose of this report is to show you how to attract
more traffic to your site without spending a fortune on
these services which simply cannot guarantee you results
anyway. Regardless of their guarantees it is simply not
an exact science but an ongoing process that requires persistence
and ongoing management on a regular basis. We are going
to cover several things you can do to dramatically improve
the chances of your site coming up on search engine results,
refer customers to your site and keep them coming back.
#1 Designing your website for optimal
Results with the Search Engines When you are building your
site there are several features to include and keep in mind.
Keywords
The search engines use keywords to determine sites rankings
and these are what people search on to find you. I recommend
you include lots of text related to your particular service
or product on every page and near the top when possible.
The more times you the text words appear the better. There
are multiple areas where you can put keywords within your
site. Keywords can be in your actual domain name, your meta
tags, your page title, actual text on the page and ALT tags
which are attached to image files. With regard to adding
keywords to your page text, for example, if you are a business
selling leather goods then you will want the word leather
to appear as many times through your site and on every page
if possible.
These key words can appear in your
description on your business. For example, instead of saying
we sell leather jackets, chaps, vests, etc. try saying we
sell leather jackets, leather chaps, leather vests, etc.
There was a time when webmasters got the idea to put hidden
text all over websites by simply making the color of the
text the same as the color of the background. This is considered
a bad practice and doing so will get your site kicked out
of the search engines. It is also not advisable to simply
repeat the same text over and over again on your site even
if it is not hidden. It also will not look so good.
Just keep in mind the benefit of having
your key words text on your site while at the same time
keeping it within reason and pleasing to the eye of the
viewer. In addition to adding text to your site directly
you can also add text tags to images in the form of ALT
tags. When your cursor is placed above these images the
text will show up in a box over the image. These are images
attached to images which can be found by the search engine
robots. Refer to your web building software application
for instructions on how to add ALT tags to images using
basic html or your software application. I recommend you
refer to your web site building application software or
a basic html resource for information on adding meta tags
to your site.
#2 Search Engine Submission
It is important that you submit your site to the major search
engines and directories. The process of submitting your
web address URL to a search engine or directory like Yahoo
is very simple but time consuming. You simply need to go
to the particular search engine such as AltaVista,Lycos,
HotBot, and Google or Yahoo and follow their instructions.
It is important to follow their instructions in completing
the submission forms because it is difficult to correct
mistakes later.
#3 Developing your Links
This is currently one of the single
most important factors in search engine rankings. More and
more search engines are using links to establish search
engine rankings. Developing your links is so very important
because more and more search engines are equating link popularity
with site popularity. The more links out there in cyberspace
to your site the better your placement will be. But it is
becoming increasingly important that your links be relevant
links. By this I mean you need to be linked to site which
are similar or have a relationship to your site. For example,
if you are a photographer then your site would do best to
be linked to other art or photography related sites, camera
sites, etc.
If you have a photography related
website it will not do you much good to be linked to medical
or leather industry web sites. An important point to note
is that the higher ranked the site you link to the more
it will benefit your site. If you link to a site which already
is ranked in the top 10 of a particular search then this
will dramatically improve your web sites ranking compared
to linking to a little known site with poor ranking. In
addition to improving your search engine rankings for when
people search on your keywords you can also expect to receive
more traffic simply from people who click through from the
linked site to your site.
#4 Always Be Promoting your Site
Most of the traffic to your website will probably eventually
come from people who have gotten your web address (URL)
from other marketing methods. Therefore, it is important
that you always include your web address on all of your
marketing materials including your business cards, letterhead
and email signatures. The strategies and resources outlined
here will get you started on your way to developing a successful
Internet marketing program.
